Practice-Based Education, Program Improvement, and Consulting
   FOSTERING STRONG CONNECTIONS, PERMANENCY, AND
BEST PRACTICES FOR CHILDREN, YOUTH, AND FAMILIES

MJ Henry & Associates, Inc., specializes in professional development, program evaluation, and consultation services for organizations working to support children, youth, and families who have experienced adversity. Led by Martha J. Henry, PhD, a Clark University trained developmental psychologist, we provide services to organizations of all sizes in the areas of child welfare, behavioral health, foster care, and adoption.

Dr. Henry brings over 25 years of experience working with and studying children and families and has a passion for translating evidence-based knowledge to everyday practice and policy development. She is the lead author of the book Adoption in The United States: A Reference for Families, Professionals, and Students. She has offered her expertise for national media programs such as NBC’s The Today Show, Time Magazine, and New York Public Radio.

We serve professionals from all disciplines who transform the lives of children, families, and communities. Our services range from providing direct care practitioners with opportunities to reflect on their practice, identify challenges, learn the latest information, and consider solutions to best support children, youth, and families to supporting social service programs to utilize data-informed decision making and foster practice improvements.

We assist in developing strategic program improvement plans and translating the latest research into everyday practice approaches and policy. Through the lenses of development, relationships, trauma exposure, and social cultural, we explore practice strategies that promote the best outcomes for people. In all of our services, we engage leadership and professionals in a meaningful discussion about the challenges of practice, what is effective, and how to improve the experiences and outcomes for children, youth, and families they serve.

This book contains answers to almost all the questions we are asked by prospective adoptive families...This is a book we will refer to often, and is an excellent resource for anyone seeking the unbiased facts about adoption.
—  Jewish Children's Adoption Network newsletter, June 2008
  • Provides valuable sources for staying up-to-date on ever-changing adoption laws
  • Includes an extensive appendix of tables and charts, clearly presenting procedures and regulations that vary by state
  • Discusses critical (yet often overlooked) behavioral, developmental, and mental health issues
  • Addresses sensitive topics, such as language use and confidentiality
  • Gives professionals and students an interdisciplinary background to increase practice effectiveness
  • Provides information on the Interstate Compact on the Placement of Children (ICPC) and the Interstate Compact on Adoption and Medical Assistance (ICAMA) — two compacts typically not included in texts, yet inevitably encountered by adoption workers, students, and parents

In theory, theory and practice are the same.
In practice, they are not.
